Beeswax

There are three types of beeswax products:

Regular Beeswax

  • is very brittle
  • can give dreads a good smell
  • will crack and flake off dreads
  • if forced into the hair it will hold dirt until the beeswax is completely melted out
  • it's a natural product
  • leaves residue behind that can build up
  • takes a while to prepare
  • can be hard to find


Dreadlocking Wax

  • can give dreads a good smell
  • great for holding dreads together when they are new
  • great for holding down loose hairs
  • it's a natural dreadlocking product
  • a great natural conditioner for dreads
  • over waxing can leave a waxing residue behind that can be melted in with a hair dryer
  • can make dreads temporarily smooth
  • can be hard to find
  • dreads can be cleansed by melting out the wax in hot water every two months


Petroleum Wax

  • can give dreads a good smell
  • so-called dread wax, that is made usually of 70% petroleum or higher
  • leaves residue behind that can build up and cause dreads to fall apart
  • lubricates the hairs, keeping them from being able to lock up
  • easy to find
